Praise for Betting on a Hijabi
“Having grown up in South Africa and witnessed the lingering effects of post-apartheid, this book resonated with me on many fronts.
The author shares practical leadership lessons that inspire individuals—often restrained by their own thinking—to step beyond their comfort zones and embrace their authentic selves. Just as powerfully, she challenges leaders who may be blindsided by bias to recognise that diversity of thought is not a risk but a true asset.
A hijabi has much to offer, and this book brings that truth to life with courage and clarity.”
Mo Abbas, Chief Growth & Sustainability Officer.
“This book resonated with me so much! Mumtaz’ experience and insights offer something for everyone whether you’re an employer, young person new to the workforce, woman of colour, or as in her own case, a hijabi.
Definitely worth a read!”

“It was a highlight of my week to attend Mumtaz Parker CMgr FIML’s book launch tonight for “Betting on a Hijabi”. Congratulations on your first book, Mumtaz! I’m sure it won’t be the last.
Leadership comes in so many diverse shapes and forms, yet some are valued and rewarded more than others. Personal stories and narratives are critical to changing that, and I’m excited to dive into a story that according to the back cover is “not about being extraordinary. It’s about being seen.”

“I enjoyed reading “Betting on a Hijabi” particularly as I myself have been privileged to work in a team managed by Mumtaz and she was everything she said she was in her book. She was a leader of compassion and empathy with a genuine interest in her people. It reminded me to have tolerance and empathy for people I lead who sometimes test limits. There are many people in my immediate life whom I would think would take something to heart from reading the book, all of whom are in leadership positions.
First off my son who has recently resigned from his job as the company he worked for did not have the same ethics or values that he had trying to manage solo parenting and work demands, my daughter who is a manager and practitioner in our local hospital, my daughter in law who is working towards a leadership position but has to manage racism, a supervisee who is a clinical manager and sometimes also marginalised by racism and the expectation to be efficient at all costs.
One last thing I wish to add is that I very much enjoyed the days that Mumtaz brought her baby to work but also worried for her about how hard it is to recover from a birth, manage baby needs and still turn up with strength, commitment and compassion for others. The book is a true reflection of Mumtaz and all that she has achieved.

“As a Muslim woman, Mumtaz tracks her journey growing up in apartheid South Africa and navigating the obstacles that compelled her to work twice as hard to succeed.
She carried this drive and perseverance through her career and moving her family to Aotearoa New Zealand. Then, through her faith, she learned to see setbacks in a new light and to ‘smell the roses’ on the way.
This is an important book for leaders, colleagues and anyone who wants to understand the impact of gender and religious bias – both conscious and unconscious. And what they can do about it.”
Debra Harrington - Communications Manager
“In a recently published motivational guide for women in the workplace, with a focus on those who choose to wear a hijab (headscarf), Mumtaz Parker talks about the experience of being a Muslim woman advancing acareer in the corporate world.
From a humble childhood in apartheid South Africa to management leadership abroad, this very personal account explains the challenges behind her successes and the lessons learnt along the way.
Her insights not only encourage all women to confidently take their place in the world of work but also offerpertinent advice to employers and managers on how they can create better workplaces for everyone.
You heard it from the hijabi.”

“I absolutely loved your book. It’s so easy to read and your voice comes through so strongly.
I related to so many of your experiences as a woman of colour. Your explanation of what being a hijabi adds to that was eye opening.
But also just within the work place - I shed tears at page 91 when you talked about having to leave work because despite trying everything it was for your own wellbeing - that happened to me too!
I’m applying for a new job and your book was perfect timing to not sell myself short in the application!
I especially liked the tips at the end of each section!
Thanks so much - I loved it! I hope you will write more! 😊👏🏽🫶🏽”
“I feel privileged in so many ways — privileged to have worked with the author, privileged to have read this book, and now privileged to share a review that I hope will inspire others not only to pick it up, but to reflect and take action in their own worlds.
Mumtaz, thank you for sharing your journey in this open, honest, and highly engaging page-turner that truly is a must-read for everyone. This is not just a book for leaders, women, or changemakers — in my opinion, it’s a book for everyone: young and old, leaders and team members, students and growing professionals alike.
It’s fascinating to read about the rich and full — yet far from easy — career journey Mumtaz has led as a woman of colour in leadership. What makes this book extraordinary is how it’s filled with ideas and reflections that challenge your thinking, ignite inspiration, and motivate you to strive for more — to be better, to embrace change, and to never give up.
I read it in just two sittings and have already discussed it in three meetings this week so impactful and inspiring. Thank you, Mumtaz, for inviting me to read your untold story. I bet you’re going to love this book too!”

Mashallah, this book is a beautifully written journey through the author’s life — from her upbringing and marriage to her experiences as a mother, professional, and woman of faith. What stands out is her honesty, patience, and strength in the face of challenges. She writes with calmness and clarity, offering lessons that inspire not only Muslim women but readers from all walks of life.
The way she shares her experiences as a hijabi in the workplace, while also embracing those who are not Muslim, makes the book inclusive and relatable. It reminds readers that strength, resilience, and faith are universal virtues. There’s a powerful thread of encouragement throughout — urging women to pursue their dreams despite obstacles, and to always put their trust in Allah.
Equally inspiring is her portrayal of motherhood. Her ability to balance family and career, even in tough times, reflects deep determination and grace. She truly embodies the spirit of a super mom — hardworking, loving, and grounded in faith.
Alhamdulillah, this book leaves you feeling uplifted and grateful. It’s a story of courage, hope, and belief that no matter what life brings, Allah’s guidance lights the way. A beautiful read from a beautiful soul.
